Who we are

Urban Intelligence is a property technology business with a passion to create innovative tech solutions to meet the town planning needs of communities in a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable way. Our award-winning, innovative software and services are used by leading organisations in the public and private sectors including Transport for London, Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), and a rapidly growing number of Local Planning Authorities nationwide. We also work closely with charity organisations such as Crisis to bring our expertise to wider social issues such as homelessness.

Our vision is to harness data and the power of technology to understand communities and plan for a better world. Whilst we operate in an unregulated sector, as an organisation, we are passionate about striving for best practice for ourselves, and for the clients and the communities that we serve. Our business crosses many fascinating and complex fields of knowledge and expertise that bring a level of exciting challenge and variety. To assist us, we are seeking a Compliance, Standards and Ethics (CSE) Officer to join our talented, diverse and multi-disciplinary team.

What you’ll be doing

The CSE Officer will have a fantastic opportunity to take ownership of a number of key responsibilities within the organisation. With the active support and encouragement of the leadership of the business, you will help us to grasp, analyse and consider a wide range of themes that may be relevant to the business today or in the future. These include:

  • Information and cyber security
  • Data protection
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Emerging technologies
  • Design, accessibility and inclusion
  • Sustainability
  • Environmental and social issues
  • Politics and ethics
  • Data standards
  • Smart cities and planning
  • Business culture, HR & Health & Safety
  • Governance
  • Risk management
  • Quality

Given the varied nature of these topics, we are seeking an individual with a solid ability for joining the dots between different areas of law, regulation, policy and fields of knowledge and industry, and to draw logical reasoning and advice for practical use by us as a fast-growing business in the UK and as we begin to consider international expansion. You will be expected to master and synthesise a vast range of information from international blueprints such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and ISO Standards to UK laws, procurement frameworks and individual client contracts.

Specific activities within the role will include:

  • Reviewing legislation, regulations, best practices and global standards against our internal processes to undertake gap analysis to move us towards being a recognised world-leading business.
  • Reviewing tenders and contracts to understand our commitments, and measuring how we are meeting client needs and expectations against agreed SLAs.
  • Undertaking critical internal assessments and audits of our processes to ensure compliance and risk mitigation. Advising on where there is room for development and improvement.
  • Being our internal expert and acting as a critical friend who can advise us on the risks and opportunities of taking different strategic decisions based on current rules and emerging trends.
  • Making standards and compliance relevant and inspiring to colleagues and challenging perceptions of ‘box ticking’ and ‘red tape’. Working with colleagues to turn high standards into a strategic opportunity for our organisation.
  • Acting as the lead on our ISO certifications (currently these are 9001, 14001, 22301, 27001 and 45001) in external audits and encouraging us to pursue further adoption of standards.
  • Tracking incidents and occurrences of non-conformance as well as highlighting our strengths to ensure that we are continually learning and developing from our experiences as an organisation.
  • Monitoring and reporting to senior management on performance against agreed standards and assisting us to benchmark our organisation against international best practice and indicators.
  • Attending conferences and events to learn more from others through networking. Engaging in discussions and debate on standards and potentially working with other organisations to create and champion new standards relevant to our sector.
  • Educating and training our people on rules, regulations and other considerations to factor into carrying out their work in a compliant and ethical manner.
  • Establishing governance working groups and committees with our stakeholders for consideration of specific topics and issues as they may arise.
