Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

About the team:

The Privacy Engineering Team goal is to make Canva the world’s most trusted company by building the tools and systems to ensure our users are advised and in control of how their data is used, and that our products meet our users expectations.

The team is responsible for building a source of truth for user consent and working with our engineers and stakeholders to develop programmatic interfaces of consumption for other Canva services. The team will also focus on the enforcement of our data policies at the scale of Canva and will collaborate with data specialists across the business to ensure data is used according to the user's preferences.

Our mission is to establish Canva as a privacy-focused company and to provide our users with choice and transparency about their data.

About the role:

We are seeking a highly-skilled and experienced Staff Backend Engineer. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will play a leading role in developing and maintaining our backend systems, with a specific emphasis on ensuring controls are in place and that Canva remains a privacy role model.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement scalable solutions that protect our users’ data and honor the trust they have placed in the Canva environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Play a leading role in designing, developing, and maintaining backend systems and APIs to ensure data use meets our users expectations and that innovative features can be developed safely and quickly whilst protecting our customers from data risks.

  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to define and implement reliable, scalable, and secure features.

  • Take a proactive approach to identify potential privacy risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.

  • Implement and maintain controls to ensure privacy preferences and user expectations are met with respect to data collection, usage, access and retention.

  • Develop and enhance tools and technologies that enable proactive monitoring, analysis, and reporting of privacy-related metrics.

  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in data privacy to continuously improve our platform's security and user protection measures.

  • Participate in code reviews, troubleshooting, and optimization to ensure high-performance, scalable, and maintainable backend systems.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to investigate and resolve privacy incidents, applying appropriate measures to prevent their recurrence.

  • Mentor engineers, sharing your knowledge and expertise in backend development and privacy engineering practices.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Strong proficiency in backend development, including experience with one or more programming languages such as Java (preferred), Python, or Ruby.

  • Proven experience of owning and operating high availability, high scale services

  • Understand the entire product life cycle, features, technical debt, QA, and supporting quality at speed

  • Experience mentoring a team of software engineers

  • Experience working with various partners such as product managers, technical program managers, data analysts, reviewers, security, legal, and other business functions outside of engineering

  • Experience in data privacy and privacy engineering preferred, but not essential

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, and experience with containerization technologies.

  • Experience with database technologies (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) and proficiency in SQL.
