Position Summary

CVS Health is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to join our team as the Principal Network Engineering of Network Core Infrastructure Operations, part of the Infrastructure Operations & Service Delivery organization. In this senior leadership role, you will lead a team of Network Engineers overseeing the management, maintenance, and optimization of our extensive network infrastructure. This infrastructure spans over 10,000 applications (approximately 4,100 cloud hosted), serves 190,000 users, encompasses 10,000+ locations, and includes multiple datacenters and multi-cloud environments.

CVS Health is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Network Security Operations to lead our dynamic team in managing and stabilizing and pushing forward our network security operations infrastructure team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the security of the network, cloud, DMZ, internet, and F5’s.  Creating and enforce policy and procedures for the network teams, ensuring cloud and application security.  Develop a network security team that is capable, motivated in supporting CVS health a world class health organization.   

Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Execute strategic vision for the overall network security operations team.
  • Conduct research and make strategic recommendations on standards in support of all network security.
  • Implement short- and long-term plans to ensure network security infrastructure capacity meets existing and future requirements business requirements.
  • Builds and maintains trusting partnerships with business and technology leaders.
  • Lead a team of network security professionals by providing mentorship, leadership, inclusiveness and creating a team with operation excellence.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance team culture.
  • Coach individual employees for their professional development and develops methods and processes for measuring individual and group level performance.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment that encourages creativity, knowledge sharing, and professional growth.
  • Define clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations for team members.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation network security, firewalls, F5’s, cloud security, internet, and DMZ edge technologies.
  • Mentoring: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, helping them develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Training Programs: Develop and deliver training programs for IT staff on firewall management, security best practices, and emerging threats.

Operations

  • Oversee network security infrastructure for CVSHealth which includes, but is not limited to firewalls, F5 (load balancers), and securing the network perimeter.
  • Ensure that all network firewalls are stable, secure, code supported, and audited.
  • Implement and maintain network processes, procedures, and diagrams.
  • Manage the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, upgrades and support of IT network security systems, firewalls, F5’s, proxies, and management tools.
  • Oversee infrastructure and operations projects related to the network security operations portfolio.
  • Define hardware/software standards for network security operations. 
  • Manage relationships with network security operations solution vendors, negotiate contracts, and ensure service level agreements are met.
  • Monitor vendor performance and recommend improvements or changes as needed.
  • Utilize metrics and data from networking tools and scripts that automate the management, maintenance, and monitoring of servers and applications
  • Effectively builds and maintains relationship with suppliers, vendors, OEMs and other third parties to ensure consistent and effective delivery of services across the CVS company.
  • Develop and manage the budget for the network security operation team to include firewalls, F5’s, and cloud.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of network security and all processes that are used for each task for daily network security operations. 
  • Generate regular reports and performance metrics for senior management.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and methodologies to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of CVS Health's network security for the operations infrastructure
  • Work in conjunctions with the then network engineering team to ensure network security compliance with new network deployments.
  • Complex Policy Development: Create and manage complex firewall policies that balance security needs with network performance and user accessibility.

Firewall Management and Threat Protection

  • Policy Review and Audits: Regularly review and audit firewall policies to ensure they comply with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Threat Analysis: Conduct advanced threat modeling and risk assessments to identify potential vulnerabilities and attack vectors.
  • Incident Response Planning: Develop and implement incident response strategies, including creating playbooks for specific types of threats.
  • Complex Issue Resolution: Resolve complex firewall and network issues that require deep technical knowledge and analytical skills.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Conduct thorough root cause analyses for security incidents or performance issues and implement preventive measures.

Audit / Compliance

  • Work with the compliance team to verify that all network devices meet and compile with relevant regulatory requirements (HIPAA, PCI, etc.).
  • Develop network security policies with the compliance team to ensure the overall network is secure and within regulatory compliance.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure firewall configurations and policies comply with relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and industry standards (e.g., PCI-DSS).
  • Governance Frameworks: Establish and maintain governance frameworks to manage firewall policies and changes consistently.

Performance Management and Capacity Planning

  • Implement monitoring tools and processes to proactively identify and address performance issues, optimizing server infrastructure efficiency.
  • Assess and plan for the capacity needs of the infrastructure to support business growth.
  • Plan for future infrastructure needs, working with cross-functional teams to anticipate growth and scaling requirements.
  • Tuning: Optimize firewall performance to handle high traffic loads without compromising security or network performance.
  • Capacity Planning: Plan for and implement firewall upgrades or expansions to handle future growth and evolving requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in IT infrastructure management with a focus on network security, firewalls, F5’s and automation
  • Proven leadership experience, including managing a team of technical professionals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of network security systems, firewalls, securing overall network including the perimeters, edges, egress, and internal connectivity.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance requirements in healthcare or related industries.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Cisco, Palo Alto, Juniper) are a plus.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or, equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years relevant experience)

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$124,372.50 - $247,200.00


This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
