Barbaricum is seeking multiple Section 508 Specialists to support a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Transition and Economic Development (OTED). OTED currently serves as policy and program lead for preparing Service members to become civilian-ready through its services provided during the Transition Assistance Program (TAP); serving as VA’s authority on Veteran economic development policies and initiatives; and orchestrating public and private partnerships which support the total well-being of service members, Veterans, and their families before, during, and after their transition from military life. To help OTED meet its organizational goals, 508 document review and remediation support is needed. This position is remote, supporting a Washington, DC based customer.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a 508 review and remediation process that includes a way to track the progress of all documents through the 508-remediation process. 
  • Assess documents for remediation effort (low, medium, and high remediation, depending on length of document and complexity to remediate).
  • Review and analyze all documents for type, to include qualifying those that may require updating before remediation, and particular elements to calculate the approximate time required to complete the project.
  • Use this analysis to provide a baseline for the forecasted timeline and how long it will take to make them 508 compliant according to the WCAG 2.0 and WCAG 2.1 standards. 
  • Create a timeline including all milestones for completion of the project.
  • Potentially test any documents required before remediation begins to identify failures in accessibility not determined by the original review.
  • Remediate specified Adobe PDF and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files to adhere to Section 508 and WCAG 2.0/2.1. This includes applying correct tags and reading order for Headers, lists, links, tables, charts, figures, graphs, color contrast, and alternative text.
  • Use tools/software to assist in remediating and testing documents, such as JAWS, CommonLook, Adobe Pro, and Colour Contrast Checker. 
  • Create and regularly update a tracker detailing the number and type of documents remediated for Section 508 compliance, forecast of planned remediation for the next month, and the number and type of documents still to complete.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3+ years as a 508 tester, preferably in a government setting
  • 3+ years’ experience with NVDA, JAWS, or other audio/visual assistive technology
  • 3+ documenting 508 compliance issues and fixes
  • Expert in 508 compliance requirements and WCAG 2.0/2.1 standards
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve document remediation issues
  • Experience working with clients and team members to convey requirements, options, and limitations as well as to brainstorm creative solutions
  • Technical understanding and ability to collaborate with staff on requirement communication, 508
  • remediation, testing and feedback
  • Ability to write standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other documentation
  • Advanced with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Acrobat Pro
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and SharePoint
  • Able to obtain a minimum of NACI (National Agency Check with Inquiries) for a Veterans Affairs Public Trust Clearance
  • 508 Trusted Tester Certificate a plus
