Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.
The mission of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics is to conduct advanced scholarship on the ethics of clinical practice, biomedical science, and public health, both locally and globally, and to engage students, trainees, the public, and policymakers in serious discourse about these issues. Through an array of programs and projects, the Berman Institute has a direct, positive impact on the health and well-being of millions of people in developed and developing countries around the world. Its particular areas of focus encompass:
- Advancing fair and compassionate healthcare;
- Leading the charge for equitable and effective public health policies and practices;
- Guiding the ethical development and use of new technologies;
- Addressing disparities arising from global sustainability challenges;
- Preparing the next generation of leaders in bioethics.
The Senior Director of Development will provide strategic leadership to advance the Development and Alumni Relations programs at Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and in attracting and securing private funding to support Berman’s strategic initiatives and priorities.
This position, along with professional and administrative staff, will raise funds from a variety of sources, including alumni, friends, and foundations to support the strategic goals and mission of the organization.
This position is a dual report to the Andreas C. Dracopoulos Director of the Berman Institute, Dr. Jeffrey Kahn and to the Johns Hopkins University Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations.
- Manage the Berman Institute’s National Advisory Board;
- Lead the evaluation, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of significant prospects and donors;
- Provide overall strategic leadership for Berman’s fundraising priorities including development operations, annual giving, major gifts, alumni relations, donor communications and publications, donor engagement and events.
- Serve as a member of Berman’s leadership team and work closely with the Director to develop private support opportunities for the Institute;
- Directly build and supervise the development and alumni relations team. Manage a staff that is focused on fundraising, alumni relations, events, and the Berman Institute Annual Fund;
- Manage and oversee all constituent engagement activities;
- Manage Berman’s campaign planning process and ensure the fiscal goals and priorities are achieved;
- In concert with the Director, establish future campaign priorities and budgets – both program-specific and collaborative efforts with other divisions of JHU;
- Lead efforts to identify new prospects and develop the prospect pipeline, with a particular focus on maintaining the health of the National Advisory Board;
- Work with Berman and Central University communications professionals to develop campaign themes and outreach and communication strategies;
- Represent Berman on various university-wide development and campaign committees and act as a contributing member of the Johns Hopkins University Development and Alumni Relations Management Team;
- Work closely with the Senior Director of Finance and Administration to ensure that fundraising priorities are well defined and improve the financial position of the Institute;
- Engage in travel, as needed, to cultivate donors and support Berman’s fundraising goals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Seven years related professional level experience, including at least two years of management experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Degree.
- Be able to understand and articulate academic values/goals, and work collaboratively with faculty, administration, students, alumni, donors, and volunteer leadership.
- Be able to establish objectives, set performance standards and organize and motivate a staff team and its individual members to achieve fundraising and alumni relations goals.
- Have a strong track record of successfully soliciting and managing major and principal gifts in a development setting.
- Have demonstrated experience with campaign planning, fundraising, project management, events organization and execution.
- Management, motivational, and programmatic consensus building skills with development professionals.
- Ability to mentor and manage development professionals and administrative staff.
- Demonstrated experience in managing advisory boards and volunteer leadership.
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to use of information technology and the management and understanding of data systems.
- Aptitude in business and financial acumen; ability to manage budgets and conduct financial analysis to include financial forecasts and projections.
