The Director, Security, Fire & Life Safety and UHN Connect is responsible for the management of all Security, Fire & Life Safety and Switchboard functions across all University Health Network (UHN) sites (ten sites across five hospitals and one post-secondary teaching institution) to meet initiatives, goals and targets of the strategic and operating plans. Embodying UHN’s mission of ”above all else, the needs of patients come first”, the successful candidate will oversee the administration, planning, design, strategy, operation, human resources, risk, compliance, and budget of these functions.

The successful candidate will lead the team toward a trauma-informed approach to security operations, one that prioritizes de-escalation and positions security operations as part of the broader health care team. The successful candidate will also be a key contributor to, and supporter of, the organization’s risk mitigation strategies and patient safety and quality initiatives related to security, fire & life safety, and UHN connect.  The successful candidate will also act as liaison between key internal and external stakeholders, including the Toronto Police Services and Toronto Fire Services, and leads or co-leads efforts to move the organization toward a safety culture.

Duties

  • Coordinating resources, advancing priorities, implementing policies and training, and promoting collaboration for the delivery of services;
  • Partnering with clinical leaders, and in particular the Clinical Lead, Security Operations, to ensure best-in-class service strategies; providing recommendations to Executive Leadership in the development of integrated service strategies and updates to Quality & Safety Leadership on initiatives and compliance;
  • Effectively plans and implements both operating and capital expenditures and manages the department’s annual operating budget and utilization of resources;
  • Overseeing the development, implementation and monitoring of short- and long-range goals in support of the strategic plans and in alignment with the organization;
  • Providing direct leadership in the management of security, fire & life safety and UHN connect and collaborates with leaders within the organization to identify service delivery models and processes;
  • Ensuring localized customer service and front-line customer engagement;
  • Responding to and resolving related high-level problems, monitoring trends in service issues and promoting staff involvement in the making of recommendations;
  • Ensuring the accuracy of information and reports;
  • Maintaining appropriate custody and authorization processes for the release of information or materials to support both confidentiality requirements and ethical business practices;
  • Leading re-design and refresh initiatives including adoption of best practices to better integrate and streamline services across the organization;
  • Preparing appropriate business plan documents and reports in support of short- and long-term planning initiatives.
  • Managing human resources functions including developing staff utilization plans to ensure adequate level/mix of human resources to execute plans and achieve required outcomes.
  • Facilitating collaboration, cooperation and coalitions among diverse groups and perspectives to improve service.

Qualifications

  • At minimum, completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Law, Security/Risk Management or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years’ operations experience and knowledge in the field of security, safety, or emergency support (fire, police, EMS, and dispatch) preferably in a large, complex, multi-site organization with unionized staff.  Experience in healthcare and/or public sector are considered an asset.
  • Administrative and leadership acumen.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Excellent change management, leadership and motivational skills with credible experience in transforming a team
  • Ability to implement changes and work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to quickly develop and enhance working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance with UHN standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to continuously learn and self-develop.
  • Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) or equivalent designation is considered an asset.
  • International Association for Healthcare Security and/or Safety and American Society for Industrial Security (International) membership, considered an asset.
