Principal Engineer, Product Security Engineering

Minimum qualifications:

• 15 years of experience in distributed systems architecture and systems integration
  
• Experience with product security, security engineering, or software assurance
  
• Experience in one or more reliable/redundant systems, high performance systems, high security/classified systems, privacy sensitive systems, globally scaled systems using multiple stacks
  

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience working with software security standards bodies or creating or working with industry consortiums or on open-source software
  
• Technical expertise in systems and software with the leadership skills to influence technical leaders across the company
  
• Ability to quickly ramp up in new subject areas with short notice as needed to provide leadership in situations such as incidents or customer escalations
  
• Excellent cross-organizational collaboration skills, with ability to navigate diverse viewpoints and deep ownership driving business results that span multiple organizations

Product Security Engineering (PSE) is responsible for ensuring that every Google Cloud product ships as secure as it can be. We do so by increasing the assurance levels of security in the infrastructure underlying all our products, increasing the capabilities of each product team to develop more secure products by design and by default, from patterns, tools, and frameworks to increasing the skill level of embedded security leads. PSE owns and drives the product security strategy for Google Cloud. We work with almost every aspect of Google’s infrastructure and on solving infrastructure security problems that have societal level impacts.

As Principal Engineer on this team, you will be responsible for the technical leadership of our own organic security engineers and the embedded security leads in our partner teams. You will be one of the key executive technical leaders across the security landscape at Google and will be expected to lead PSE organically and Google security more generally in the ideation, design, and development of numerous simultaneously executed product security related projects and initiatives. You will partner closely with other principal engineers and key area technical leaders across the entire spectrum of Google’s Technical Infrastructure to identify platform level security issues and patterns, develop systemic solutions, and supervise the technical implementation of these.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $278,000-$399,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

• Serve as the executive technical leader for product security across Google Cloud and as an executive leader in security across Cloud.
  
• Own and drive product security initiatives in Google Cloud and collaborate closely with other executive leaders on initiatives across Cloud, Technical Infrastructure, and the broader Google Security community.
  
• Cultivate a culture of security engineering competency across our embedded partner teams and across Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  
• Drive large, technically complex, cross-functional, multi-year security efforts. Work closely with technical leads and executive leadership to review technical designs and architectural improvements, while also considering engineering tradeoffs between security, reliability, and performance.
  
• Leverage deep technical industry expertise and in systems and software to determine security infrastructure architectural trade-offs for reliability and product flexibility.
