Job Profile SummaryResponsible for the engineering, design, configuration, installation, maintenance, and upgrade of the office networking environment. Provides technical support to various departments and users with regards to the office networking environment. May serve as a liaison with vendors and other third party providers. May provide mentoring to team members. May act as a Project Lead for office networking initiatives.Careel Level Summary• Operates under minimal supervision; may provide mentorship to lower level Engineers.Critical CompetenciesKey Responsibilities• Performs complex engineering, design, implementation, and maintenance tasks on the office networking environment. Assist with peer reviews on office networking projects and initiatives. Develop project plans and task lists for various office networking initiatives. Identifies and reviews anomalies that are broad and potentially service impacting. Identify, review, and recommend security postures to peers and appropriate security teams. Researches, evaluates, and recommends hardware and software solutions. Serves as a troubleshooter on complex network problems. Acts as an escalation point for high level customer issues. Interaction as required with vendors to investigate new equipment and services. Responsible for evaluating cost and quality of equipment and services; and provides recommendations. Responsible for the implementation planning prior to the actual installation of hardware such as routers, firewalls, wireless, and switches. Remains informed of new developments and trends; may make recommendations to management on desirable additions and developments. Assists team in daily operations and requests but prioritizes projects. Participates in on[1]call support per team design.Knowledge• Advanced knowledge of the design, configuration, installation, maintenance, administration ,and upgrade of the office networking environment, including expert level knowledge in one or more of the following: firewalls, switches, routers, wireless infrastructure, etc.Skills• Cloud: Responsible for the engineering, design, configuration, installation, maintenance, and upgrade of the local area network (LAN) and/or wide area network (WAN). Provides technical support to various departments and users with regards to the LAN/WAN. Advanced knowledge of the design, configuration, installation, maintenance, and upgrade of the local area network (LAN) and/or wide area network (WAN). Advanced knowledge of network operations. Advanced knowledge of Cisco hardware and IOS. . Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or Information Systems is preferred. CCNA required. Requires 4-5 years of network engineering experience. Minimum of 1 year experience in a customer service oriented position preferred. Must exhibit a FANATICAL customer service attitude. Demonstrated ability to consistently provide FANATICAL support. Design & Build: DESIGN: Perform design requirements feasibility studies. Perform vendor recommendation / selection and coordination for hardware testing and installations. Examine build-out designs and implemented designs for deficiencies and facilitate corrections. . BUILD:. Install software configurations against hardware components. Examine logical configurations for accuracy. Prepare maintenance plan documentation & change management. Examine maintenance plans for accuracy. Examine change management for accuracy. Script maintenance implementations. Work in either a lead role or assisting role during maintenance implementations.• IMPROVEMENTS:. Develop Standard Operating Procedure’s (SOP’s) & Method of Procedure’s (MOP’s). Develop network standardization practices. Document informational content for specialized network designs to be used for training needs. Train new network typologies, hardware and technologies to internal teams . Lead Root Cause Analysis sessions to achieve better networking practices. Determine baseline requirements for our network needs. Provide code analysis on existing software, IOS testing and software recommendations. Create network lab mock ups for error testing.• ADDITIONAL:. Act as 3rd level escalations POC for design or other related problems. Conduct provider testing / deployment of new services. Monitor capacity and plan for bandwidth additions . Establish project priority based on business needs. . At least 4 years of Network Engineering experience, to include at least 3 years of recent experience with network design and build-out of LAN/WAN’s and/or large scale network retrofits and remediation’s, required. Experience working with 3rd party networking vendors with an understanding of the service/hardware/software portfolios they provide. Expert level experience working with most of the following technologies: HSRP, VLAN, CDP, port-channels, MPLS, BGP, LDP, QoS, IPv6, OSPF, vPC, STP, DWDM, EVPN, L2VPN, L3VPN. Multi-vendor experience working with the following platforms: Cisco IOS, ASR 1k (IOS-XE), ASR 9k (IOS-XR), Nexus 7k/9k/3k (NX-OS), BTI, Arista (EOS).. Experience with network service monitoring systems (Arbor, Zenoss, Syslog, SolarWinds, WhatsUp Gold, etc…).• Network Operations: The Network Operations Network Engineer III is a key element within the Rackspace Infrastructure team and is expected to provide a high level of technical expertise to ensure the uptime and maintenance of critical networking systems. A Racker in this role takes ownership of complex network issues and ensures they are resolved and/or successfully documented and handed off to an oncoming shift. The Racker accepts and takes ownership through to resolution of issues escalated by other Network Operations Engineers and creates training and mentoring opportunities for those engineers as appropriate. The Network Operations Network Engineer III is heavily involved in technology, tool, process, and training improvements for the team. . The Racker leverages substantial technical skills and experience to provide subject matter expertise to ensure these improvements are implemented successfully and other Network Operations Network Engineers are trained to the new standards. Technical issues can include troubleshooting latency, packet loss, and poor performance; responding to DDoS attacks; identifying and resolving switch and router hardware and software failures; identifying and resolving configuration inconsistencies; identifying and escalating problems with networking platforms or technologies; planning and conducting complex maintenances to ensure standardization and uptime; and managing Internet providers and connectivity. The Network Operations Network Engineer III has an advanced to expert aptitude with: All supported network platforms (Cisco 2900, 3500, 3700, 4900, 6500, ASR1k, ASR9k, Nexus 3k, Nexus 6k, Nexus 7k, Arista 7000, etc…). All supported Layer 2 and 3 protocols and features (STP, HSRP, VLANs, CDP, port[1]channels, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, DWDM, etc…). Monitoring systems (Arbor, Zenoss, Syslog, SolarWinds, WhatsUp Gold, etc…). The Network Operations Network Engineer III requires: At least 4 years of Network Engineering experience. CCNA or CCNP-Security certification. Schedule flexibility to include working a weekend day regularly and holidays as required by the business. improvements. The ideal candidate possesses: A minimum of 5 years of recent networking experience in a command-line oriented environment. At least 3 years of experience with responsibility for configuration and problem resolution of OSPF and/or BGP. CCIE-level aptitude. A minimum of 12 months of experience in a customer service role. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Critical thinking skills and the ability to provide solutions with precision during high-pressure situations . The ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work under pressure. Comfort and proficiency in delegating tasks to other engineers. Attention to detail in documenting information and the ability to own customer issues through resolution. The capability to demonstrate expert problem-solving skills coupled with a habit of regularly taking on responsibility. A desire to expand personal technical knowledge and mentor other engineers to expand knowledge. The ability to identify were process can be improved and engage managers and other teams to implement those improvements. .Education• High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science is preferredCertifications• CCNA or CCNP-Security required. Wireless certifications preferredExperience• Requires at least 4 years of Network Engineering experienceMust be able to pass a Public Trust background check• Must be a U.S. Citizen. • May require further DOD security clearance.Physical Demands• General office environment.
