The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Director, Security Research to lead and grow the teams who are putting Datadog security products and team on the map. Reporting to the CISO, you will be responsible for designing, building, and leading the security research arm that will empower Datadog to solve complex problems that our customers are faced with, research and produce in-depth original content about security concerns that are impacting any industry, and partnering with academia to explore and advance areas that provide protections to Datadog’s products and customers. 

 

You will work very closely with Datadog’s Product Management, Sales, Security and Product Engineering, Community, and other teams to identify problem areas that our customers and internal teams are faced with, new techniques for protecting critical assets, and new threats and vulnerability vectors that require in-depth research. You will also work with technical teams across Datadog to identify what innovation is happening, as well as provide research results and guidance to Product Management to assist them in improving Datadog’s security products.

 

You’ll join at an ideal time to make a big impact, the product is seeing very high growth, with many new features to build as well as a need for scaling up dramatically. You’ll be involved in every step of the process—defining product, designing architecture, managing the team, recruiting excellent analysts and engineers.

 

You Will

  • Manage and grow teams of talented analysts and engineers, ensuring they deliver high quality, timely work and that they’re happy, motivated, and growing
  • Work with the product team to identify growth areas for the security products and build a research strategy that helps with that growth
  • Lead a team that is producing original content that maintain significant traffic after 60 days of publication
  • Define a process for approving research areas and identify what benefits the research results can bring to Datadog’s products and company’s profile
  • Work with engineering and product teams to apply research results as indicators of compromise or signals that can provide out-of-the-box value for our customers
  • Have active participation with the security, open-source, cloud and cloud security, malware analysis, and DevSecOps communities
  • Establish relationships with teams who maintain popular open-source projects
  • Promote thought leadership by engaging as an all-around security expert that expands Datadog’s image as an expert in areas such as cloud security, application security, and DevSecOps 

 

Requirements

  • Proven track record of leading research teams or active participation as a security researcher mentoring junior talent
  • Proven experience of organizational design with a focus on measurable outcomes and experience building partnerships with multiple stakeholders
  • Being able to provide a vision and direction for a security research team that can act independently to build relationships and processes to meet the outcomes defined for the team
  • Proven track record of being a subject matter expert in any of the main security research areas such as 1) reverse engineering, 2) malware analysis, 3) application / web security, 4) cloud security, 5) network protocol analysis, 6) cryptography, or 7) DevSecOps
  • Active participation in the security research and/or open source community and a track record of identifying vulnerabilities and providing solutions for them
  • History of original-content via blog posts or conference talk submissions

 

Bonus points

  • CISSP, CISM, OSCP, or similar certifications
  • You are connected to the Information Security/DevOps industries via social media, chats, or forums
  • You talk like you write; you are clear, concise, confident, and unafraid to make presentations.
  • You are part, or have been, part of program committees of popular security conferences or track record of speaking at conferences
  • You are aware and have already interacted with certification and governmental bodies working on security
  • You hold a PhD and/or understand the peculiarities of academia
