About the Role:

The Autonomous Vehicle Security (AVsec) team at Cruise focuses on securing the autonomous vehicle itself.  This includes all the AV components in the vehicle, how they communicate with each other, and the vehicle’s communication to our back office systems.  This requires partnering with groups throughout the company to create and deliver components and systems that are secure. Our work includes building and deploying security mechanisms such as secure boot, key management systems, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and authenticated and encrypted communication streams.  We perform threat models and work on secure design for current and future vehicles.  The team audits and assesses code and systems for security threats and remediates problems when identified.

We are especially interested in speaking with candidates that have diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We’re solving novel security problems at Cruise; novel perspectives make this easier!

What you’ll be doing
  • Design, implement, and validate security mechanisms such as secure boot, secure key storage, and firmware signing.
  • Perform security reviews ranging from architectural design to threat modeling and source code level assessments, providing actionable recommendations to make our devices and applications more secur
  • Collaborate closely with engineering and security teams on security focused design reviews and implementation of security best practices in essential systems
  • Developing bespoke software on and off the vehicle 
  • Be capable or prioritizing security efforts as well as help teams understand prioritization of performing security mitigation work

 

What you must have
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in the embedded security space
  • Software development experience with Python, C/C++, and Go
  • A documented history of finding high impact vulnerabilities or participating in the creation of tools to do the same 
  • A track record of developing projects from design to implementation and maintenance
  • A broad and practical understanding of security fundamentals and their application
  • Experience with a number of embedded security features such as secure boot, secure key storage, secure communications
  • Practical knowledge and experience working in environments securing production level devices as well as devices under active development

An interest in building creative solutions to challenging security problems with a focus on mentorship and scaling the team’s impact

  • Knowledge of automotive architecture, vehicle sensors, and communication protocols
