SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

PRODUCT SECURITY ENGINEER (STARLINK)

Enabled by a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites, Starlink will provide fast, reliable internet to populations with little or no connectivity, including those in rural communities and places where existing services are too expensive or unreliable. Starlink is now delivering initial beta service and accepting pre-orders both domestically and internationally, and will continue expansion to near global coverage of the populated world in 2021.

SpaceX is seeking technical, passionate engineers to secure Starlink software and hardware. We are looking for people who see the big picture, prioritize accordingly, and are comfortable with working at different levels of abstraction.

Ideally, you will have notable skills in one or more of the following: exploit development or mitigation, security architecture design, firmware security, software development, or operating system security. Being flexible, communicating clearly, and establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with other engineering teams are paramount to success.

If you seek a fast-paced environment, crave impact, love the hunt for vulnerabilities, and love the challenge of defense, SpaceX may be your ideal next career step.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with development teams to design security into the system and drive security reviews
  • Threat modeling, mitigation, and validation - including software and hardware vulnerability auditing
  • Catalyze security improvements that matter
  • Build prototypes and production systems; identify, design, and implement security improvements in existing systems
  • Investigate technologies that could qualitatively improve security posture
  • Develop tools to assist in modeling, analysis, detection, and prevention of security threats
  • Stay current on industry developments affecting security and privacy policy

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or physics discipline OR 2+ years of professional experience in software development in lieu of a degree
  • Experience in exploit development or mitigation
  • Experience with software development in Python, C/C++, or Golang
  • Experience designing and implementing security solutions for operating systems, distributed systems, and/or firmware/IoT devices

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated skill in hardware and software security, including a track record of identifying and mitigating high-impact vulnerabilities
  • Experience contributing security improvements to complex systems
  • Experience with disassemblers and/or reverse engineering; especially regarding reverse engineering embedded systems/IoT devices
  • Fundamental understanding of network protocols; including the TCP/IP stack as well as UDP based protocols
  • Experience with implementing or breaking Secure Boot
  • Experience with fuzzing, buffer overflows, and other common exploits
  • Experienced in navigating large, complex, interactive systems
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Desire and ability to ramp up quickly on new technologies and a demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity
  • Advanced degree in a technical or engineering discipline

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends if needed to meet critical deadlines

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
