Job Description

As a Network & Firewall Engineer, you will own the firewalls and take responsibility for the deployment, design, maintenance of our network & firewall infrastructure. Ensuring smooth running and providing a quick response to any incidents.  

Working closely with our Platform Engineers and Solution Architects you will ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking and firewall tools.

At Genomics England we have a network that covers on-prem data centres and AWS with large sensitive Data Sets which require specific security, networking, and firewalls in place. In this role, you will work with the broader Cyber Security Team developing skills across networking and security. 

Skills & Experience 

  • It is essential you have experience of the Fortinet Product Stack - FortiManager, Fortigate/NGFW
  • Knowledge of how to maintain and upgrade firewall hardware and software to ensure high performance
  • Experience of designing, deploying, and managing computer networks utilising firewalls as a security mechanism
  • Experience configuring and installing different network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS) (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS).
  • Good experience in a network focused hands-on technical role working with IP routing protocols/technologies and platforms in large scale data center and/or WAN network environments, is also highly desirable

Qualifications

Ideally, one or more networking or security certification

Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility. We expect most people to come into the office 2 times each month as a minimum. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. For some people this is 1 day a quarter, for others it is several days a week. There is no expectation that staff will return to the office full time unless they want to. The exception would be some of our roles that would require you to be on site full time e.g., lab teams, reception team. 

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to, reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum. Our office locations are Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.
