Software Engineer Intern, Information Security (Summer 2023)

Job Description

Software Engineer Interns on the Information Security team ensure the safety of data and dollars entrusted to us by working to improve the security of Block applications. They collaborate with product teams to identify and mitigate risks to Block.

You Will:

• Red Teaming to test our security posture, find vulnerabilities, and exercise our detection and response.
• Discover security issues through penetration testing, source code review, and design review.
• Communicate the issues to teams across Square with clear recommendations for how to fix them and their severity. Assist with fixing issues as needed.
• Support response to vulnerabilities discovered internally or externally.
• Other supporting activities:
  • Security Research
  • Automate discovery and fixing of issues through code scanning and tool improvements.
  • Design and implement security features and mitigations in libraries and frameworks to remediate classes of vulnerabilities.

Qualifications

You Have: 

• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Math, or a related technical field, graduating between December 2023 and May 2025. Recent Bootcamp graduates and engineering training participants are also considered within six months of completing program/training requirements
• Programming experience in one or more object-oriented languages such as: Java, Python, Ruby, Go, C, and C++
• Experience or interest in:
  • Red teaming, web security
  • AWS
  • Kubernetes, core infrastructure
  • Identity, authentication
  • Cryptography, HSM
  • Memory corruption
  • Mobile app security
  • Scripting, automation, programming.
• Square internships are 12-weeks and co-op placements are 16 weeks, available for Summer 2023

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on the candidate's work location and may be may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $46.00
Zone B: USD $43.70
Zone C: USD $41.40
Zone D: USD $39.10

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
