Job Description

This research engineer position is responsible for developing and supporting the engineering components of Verisk Extreme Event Solution earthquake models that cover multiple regions and multiple perils such as ground shaking, liquefaction, landslide, fire, tsunami. The engineering components include identifying the impact of these perils can have on the built environment in terms of physical damage which can result in monetary loss of buildings/infrastructures, contents as well as loss of use (downtime). The candidate will work closely with a team of structural and geotechnical engineers, seismologists, and specialists to perform probabilistic risk assessment. Candidates should have a desire to use their problem-solving skills in applying sound engineering principles to solve unique and challenging problems as new areas of modeling emerge. The candidate is expected to be a highly motivated, detail oriented, well organized, self-directed, outstanding in writing and speaking and an excellent collaborator.

About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role

  • Author technical writing for internal and external publications
  • Data acquisition (including post-event survey) and analysis to understand building inventory and their vulnerability in regions of interest
  • Perform analytical studies on damage observations or synthesized data to develop fragility functions for a variety of assets subjected to earthquake shaking, liquefaction, landslide, tsunami, fire and etc.
  • Use data from independent research to assess and validate model components and its overall performance
  • Present VERISK models to technical and non-technical audiences and provide support to clients and staff as needed
