Security is a critical part of the Couchbase business and product strategy, and because of our amazing company and headcount growth, we are looking to add a global Information Security leadership role to our Information Technology department.  The ideal candidate for this role will come with a strong background of Security and will have built and implemented contemporary security strategies, standards and tools.  Reporting to the CFO, the person in this role will evolve, manage, and support Couchbase’s security strategy, policies and requirements.  This role is critical to our company’s world class team strategy as we continue to evolve our internal business practices for scale in a way that is easy to do business with.
As our Senior Director, Information Security, you will be responsible for security monitoring and alerting operations, incident response, and vulnerability management efforts while building a world class security organization to protect our brand, reputation, and intellectual property. The successful candidate will have a positive attitude, proven people leadership skills, strong negotiating ability, a passion for exceptional customer service attention to detail, practical problem-solving abilities, ability to proactively identify opportunities, evaluate solutions, make recommendations and quickly implement selected solutions.

The ideal candidate brings experience and thought leadership in:

  • internal processes, controls, and even applications to solve bigger information security problems
  • building and managing a progressive and agile security environment in a high growth, late stage private enterprise company, with plans for continuous global expansion
  • attracting, recruiting, growing and leading a security team/org and can demonstrate significant progress and drive the evolution of the security environment
  • partnering with both customers and vendors on company security policies and roadmaps
  • enterprise wide influencing and change management


  • Provide leadership to the enterprise's information security organization
  • Develop and enhance an information security management framework
  • Assist with the overall business technology planning, providing a current knowledge and future vision of technology and systems
  • Lead, develop and inspire a small but growing team in a manner consistent with the Couchbase  Values
  • Develop, implement and monitor a strategic, comprehensive enterprise information security, IT risk management program.
  • Work directly with the business units to facilitate risk assessment and risk management processes
  • Understand and interact with related disciplines through committees to ensure the consistent application of policies and standards across all technology projects, systems and services
  • Partner with business stakeholders across the company to raise awareness of risk management concerns
  • Support IT security inquiries from customers and vendor security assessments
  • Develop and deliver virtual and in-person end-user cyber security awareness training
  • Respond to and resolve incidents and vulnerabilities and assess for risk, prevention, and remediation
  • Providing ongoing operations metrics for daily management of team and for leadership visibility
  • Supporting and assisting with external audits/assessments, certifications and accreditations to achieve and maintain compliance.
  • Communicate with stakeholders, both at the Executive and Board of Directors level
  • This person will also be a member of the Senior Leadership Team at Couchbase, which brings additional opportunities to lead cross functionally across Couchbase on key global priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Able to align with, embrace, lead and teach Our Values
  • Innovative thinking and leadership with an ability to lead and motivate cross-functional, interdisciplinary teams
  • Uncompromising level of personal integrity
  • Degree in business administration or a technology-related field highly preferred
  • 10+ years of related experience in a combination of risk management, information security and IT roles
  • Professional security management certification highly preferred
  • Deep knowledge of common information security management frameworks, such as ISO/IEC 27001, and NIST
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Experience with contract and vendor negotiations and management including managed services
  • Specific experience in Agile (scaled) software development or other best in class development practices
  • Experience with Cloud computing/Elastic computing across virtualized environments
  • Understanding of audit compliance frameworks (SOX, PCI, GDPR, etc.)
  • Cybersecurity certification (CISSP, CISSM, CISA) or ability to obtain certification
  • Experience guiding network and systems policies and evangelizing through influence
