Snapshot

As DeepMind continues to grow, we are seeking a Security Engineer to join our Global Security team. We’re looking for a highly talented and driven individual who wants to be part of an outstanding team, in an inspiring and collaborative environment. You’ll be working with some of the brightest minds which takes skill, passion and an exceptional attention to detail. With a people-first approach, this role would suit someone who thrives in fast-paced, changing environments and is looking to define their career within a company that could change the world.

About Us

We’re a dedicated scientific community, committed to “solving intelligence” and ensuring our technology is used for widespread public benefit.

We’ve built a supportive and inclusive environment where collaboration is encouraged and learning is shared freely. We don’t set limits based on what others think is possible or impossible. We drive ourselves and inspire each other to push boundaries and achieve ambitious goals.

We are a growing global security team with a diverse set of skills supporting the organisation’s wider mission, objectives and priorities. The Security team plays a critical role in this mission in two main ways:

  • Protecting our people, operations, and research
  • Ensuring that our technology is developed responsibly with a keen focus on security and privacy

As an early member of the Security team, you will make decisions that will have a significant impact on the DeepMind mission now and into the future.

The Role

As the Senior Security Engineer you will collaborate with DeepMind Engineers and Researchers to build security into AI systems at the algorithm, software, and infrastructure level to minimise risks from emerging threats.

You will have experience in being a part of security engineering teams and securing large-scale security platforms. You will have extensive experience in performing security reviews (code, architecture, threat modeling, etc.) to understand the attack surface of complex systems, and review and provide guidance to mitigate. You will work closely with stakeholders to bring AI technology and research to the world, responsibly. You will coordinate between many stakeholders, set expectations for deliverables from many different teams, keep track of success of parallel efforts, identify key roadblocks and work collaboratively with the team members involved to keep things moving.

We are looking for an engineer who is willing to lead and take initiative to move our projects forward. You should have strong interpersonal skills and be a teammate. You should be flexible in adapting to changing requirements and able to cope with and reduce ambiguity. An ability to quickly understand, risk assess, and test unfamiliar systems is valuable. A demonstrated interest or experience in ML security research is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical security assessments, code audits, threat modelling, and design reviews on ML systems and underlying technologies using an offensive mindset
  • Communicate and influence research and engineering teams on assessment outcomes (isolation/sandboxing, least privilege principle, defence in depth, memory corruption, XSS, authz/authn, injection, etc.)
  • Perform independent vulnerability research with an exploratory mindset to identify novel attack vectors against ML systems and data
  • Perform security architecture design (application security, network security)
  • Identify and build technical solutions to help mitigate security vulnerabilities in ML systems and infrastructure; or prevent whole classes of bugs to work towards a secure-by-default design by switching towards a defensive mindset
  • Build tooling, infrastructure, and platforms that protect DeepMind data and technical infrastructure
  • Partner with DeepMind Engineering leadership to define security roadmap and initiatives
  • Expand partnerships with Google and DeepMind in security research and engineering

About You

In order to set you up for success as a Security Engineer at DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience with relevant industry experience in security.
  • Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages (e.g. Java, Python, C++).
  • Experience leading one or more of the following: software security engineering, vulnerability research, penetration testing (application, network), threat modelling, incident response, cryptographic systems, network security, identity
  • Innovative and resourceful, and are motivated by a desire to take initiative and find solutions to complex problems

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience presenting research at well known security conferences (e.g. Black Hat, Def Con, BSides, etc.) or machine learning conferences (CAMLIS, ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, etc.)
